A series named after a former Bob McIntosh-trained star was dominated by pair of Bob McIntosh-trained fillies aspiring to be stars in Thursday’s opening leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series
for two-year-olds at Mohawk Racetrack.
Lauren, who was a winner in her debut at Woodstock Raceway on July 3 in 1:59, shaved major seconds off the mark when she front-stepped to a 1:54.2 score in the opening division for driver Jody Jamieson. The Modern Art-One Cadet miss took over past the quarter pole and laid down panels of :58.1 and 1:27 before sprinting home in :27.2 to post the 2-1/2 length win over Shoplifter Hanover. Another McIntosh-trained lass, Day To Ponder, was third.
Bred and owned by Gordon and Claudia Wright of Charlotte, Michigan, Lauren is now 2-for-2 to start her career. The freshman is a sister to a couple of hard-hitting campaigners in Gro (1:50.3 - $453,585) and Gar (1:50.3 - $260,952).
Strike An Attitude, one half of a heavily-favoured entry, survived a first-over journey for driver Steve Condren to win by a half-length margin in 1:53.3. She dug in an used a :27.1 final frame to win over Artic Byrd. Another McIntosh-trained filly, L A Confidential, rounded out the top three finishers in the $20,000 division.
The homebred daughter of Western Hanover-Strike A Balance, who was fourth in her debut on June 29 at Mohawk, is owned by the Robert McIntosh Stables Inc and Paul Ysebaert of Ontario along with the C S X Stable of Ohio. The youngster is a half-sister to All Accounted For (1:52.2 - $342,851.)
The second leg of the Whenuwishuponastar goes next Thursday at Mohawk, with the final slated for Thursday, July 29.
