Liberals Kibosh Ontario Place As Possible Casino Location

In a significant decision which could prove to be very favourable for the provincial horse-racing industry, the Ontario Liberal Government announced on Wednesday, June 6 that it has scrapped any plans of having a casino erecting at Ontario Place, located on Toronto's waterfront.

After having received advisement from John Tory, who led a panel with the task of studying the future of the provincially-owned Ontario Place grounds, Ontario Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Michael Chan announced that the location is no longer an option for a future casino.

"We made our recommendations as we were asked to do, and we're asked to recommend specifically what should be done with Ontario Place, and our judgement was as a committee that it should not be a casino. And I think there are lots of other ideas out there," Tory told 680News.

A report by the The Globe & Mail has quoted Toronto Councillor Mike Layton as saying, “I think this is a good step forward. It’s a good decision for Toronto,” although, others are waiting to see how the situation plays out.

“I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing right now,” Toronto Councillor Mark Grimes was quoted as saying.

Chuck: A larger cut than 75%??????? I wish I made 75% on some of the ventures I've done over the years. Good Luck Mr. Duncan. Enjoy your last term in office, may it be short.

Again the natural location and progression is for adding table games at racetracks. The Liberals and OLG need to start to have meaningful discussion with horse racing and re-work agreements with all partners. So put those additions at Woodbine/Mohawk and any other tracks that wish to expand and let's move on. The Liberals don't fool anyone in why they want to scrap the Slots agreement. The gov't wants a larger cut and are getting ready to add slots at bingo halls with their video bingo ideas. It doesn't take a genius to know that adding casinos to the province will only be done with a much larger takeout by the casino operator/owner than the current 25% takeout with slots.
The Liberals will soon understand that municipalities in general don't want all these casinos popping up.
Good for Toronto for slamming the door on building a casino at Ontario Place! So up next will be Mississauga. Not the same draw there for operators Mr. Duncan.
