Standardbred Canada’s newly formed Youth Council is off the ground! Eleven spirited members under the age of twenty-five from across the country make up the council, which is beaming with fresh and innovative ideas
to help promote and energize the harness racing industry.
Mark Whidden, Youth Council member and harness racing enthusiast from Truro, Nova Scotia, explains that, “the Youth Council was formed with the sustainability and longevity of the sport in mind. As young people, we hope to provide a rejuvenated outlook as to what the sport needs in order to thrive in the future as well as to act as ambassadors to Standardbred racing, making every effort to promote and encourage involvement within the sport.”
The council has met twice via conference call and has already assisted in executing many fantastic events and initiatives such as Horseplay, an interactive program designed to teach youth and families all about horses and racing, Fireworks and Family Fun Night at Mohawk, and the I Love Canadian Harness Racing Fan Club membership drive at this year’s Pepsi North America Cup.
Keep an eye out for the SC Youth Council at a track or event near you!
