The public was clearly behind Carlisimo in Red Shores’ featured $2,700 pace at Summerside Raceway on Sunday (June 2), but the complexion of the contest surely changed when the public’s 1-5 favourite was pulled up in the race.
After having been powered to the lead early, Carlisimo was racing on the front end when he was pulled up due to broken equipment. The turn of events allowed the Leith Waite-trained and Corey MacPherson-driven Soccer Hanover ($6.00) to excel on the point in Race 9 and go on to record an eight-length victory in 1:56.2. The Mike McGuigan-driven Heza Workof Art finished second and Mando Fun (driven by Dale Spence) third. Waite, of Summerside, also owns Soccer Hanover
Race 10 on the program was carded as the $2,200 ‘back-up class,’ and it was won by Ralph Sweet trainee Confident Fella ($15.30), who persevered for a gate-to-wire head victory in 1:59.1 from the rail.
Corey MacPherson was aboard Confident Fella for the upset win, which was one of three victories for MacPherson on the program. Fellow driver Dave Dowling also recorded a driving triple on the afternoon.
