Buried behind a wall of horses, Sand Tilly Lace found room deep in the Lightning Lane to score a 10-1 upset victory in Friday’s $22,500 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
Sand Tilly Lace got away second for Dan Charlino, but was shuffled to fourth at the top of the stretch. Charlino guided the four-year-old daughter of Sand Shooter-Sara Toots to the Lightning Lane, where she out-kicked Phone Terror by a head in 1:52.4 on a “good” surface. Bad Glamour Girl was third. With her fourth-place cheque, Do Me Honor soared over $600,000 in career earnings.
Ron Burke trains Sand Tilly Lace, who extended her career bankroll to $184,988, for Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.
Elsewhere on the card, Rip This Joint won at first asking in 1:55.1, fastest this year by a two-year-old pacing gelding on a five-eighths-mile track. Dave Palone piloted the son of Western Terror-Cheryl Hanover for trainer Mike Palone and owner Lone Wolf Stable.
Tony Hall drove three winners on the 12-race program.
