If you’re looking for breeder Dave Lemon over the next few days, it might be wise to start your search somewhere near cloud nine.
Lemon’s bread and butter broodmare, Daylon Marvel, produced a pair of winners at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, and what a show the two of them put on.
First up was the undefeated Daylon Miracle, who stretched her undefeated streak to seven thanks to a career-best clocking of 1:54 in a $23,000 conditioned assignment for soon-to-be Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer, Dave Wall.
Wall hustled the Dave Lemon-trained three-year-old daughter of Pegasus Spur to immediate command from Post 5 and she successfully front-stepped her way through panels of :27.1, :56.2 and 1:25.2 before using a :28.3 closing panel to seal the deal.
Unraced as a rookie, the flawless filly has come a long way in a short period of time in her sophomore season. The lion’s share of the purse boosted her earnings to $65,600.
Just one race later in the $50,000 Open Trot it was Daylon Magician who found himself in the spotlight thanks to a track and Canadian record-equaling mile of 1:51.1 for trainer/driver Jack Moiseyev. The O’Brien Award-winning four-year-old son of Kadabra blew away his trotting foes, and in doing so came with one-fifth of a second from matching Pine Chip’s world record of 1:51 for four-year-old trotting horses.
Daylon Magician got away fifth while Imperial Count powered to the lead and threw down an opening quarter clocked in :26.4. Windsong Geant brushed past the leader in the backstretch, but as soon as he cleared he came under immediate attack from a fired up Daylon Magician. That foe cruised to the top shortly past the half, which popped up in :54.4. Moiseyev rolled Daylon Magician to the three-quarter pole in 1:23.3 before using a :27.3 final frame to put the finishing touches on the record-equaling performance. Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, Daylon Magician drew clear to win by 6-3/4 lengths over Andover America, with the show dough earned by Windsong Geant.
Daylon Farms Ltd of Komoka own the 16-time winner who now boasts a 2-1-0 record in four starts this season. The career winner of $1,368,925 sent out a serious message that he’s a horse to be reckoned with in next month’s Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk Racetrack.
