Rookies Strut Their Stuff At Mohawk

Pacers and trotters were out in full force at Mohawk on Friday morning, as the Campbellville oval was the scene of ten qualifiers for the freshmen set

Shelliscape (Artiscape-Shell I Scoot) rallied to win the first qualifier of the morning in 1:57.2 for the tandem of driver Randy Waples and trainer Bob McIntosh. She used a :28.1 final quarter to prevail by three-quarters of a length in what her first charted mile. The pacing lass, who was a $25,000 purchase from last year’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale, is a sister to a trio of $100,000 winners including the Village Connection gelding, VC Scooter (1:51.4 - $254,489).

Terem Up Louie (Rambaran-Armbro Bailey) was treated to a pocket trip through fractions of :29.3 and :59 before popping off the rail and pressing the leader to the three-quarter pole in 1:29.1 in the second qualifier. Trainer/driver Fred Jamieson called on the colt through the lane and he responded with a :28.4 closing panel which propelled the youngster to the 1-1/4 lengths decision in 1:58. It was the first qualifying effort for the homebred who is the first foal out of his dam.

Addwater (Mach Three-Symphony) motored to the lead in his second qualifier, and once in command of the tempo he kept on rolling en route to posting a 5-1/4 lengths decision in 1:56.2. Trainer Joe Pereira watched driver Jody Jamieson rate the colt through panels of :29.2, :58.1 and 1:27.3 before letting the youngster rattle home in :28.4 for the win. He was purchased out of last year’s Forest City Yearling Sale for $30,000.

Class Of O Nine (Camluck-Skippin School) tracked cover and then powered home in :28.1 to take her qualifying debut in an impressive clocking of 1:56.3 for the tandem of driver Randy Waples and trainer Bob McIntosh. The homebred, who kicked out a final half of :56.3 to post the win, is a full sister to Leading Camdidate (1:54.3 - $32,435).

Thinking Out Loud (Ponder-Los Angeles) also used off-the-pace tactics to win his Friday morning assignment in a time of 1:58.3. With the duo of driver Randy Waples and trainer Bob McIntosh in his corner, the youngster snapped home in a :28-second clip to win during his maiden voyage. The homebred is the brother to a pair of big money-winning fillies in West Of L A (1:53.2 - $257,150) and You See L A (1:52 - $249,339).

North Shore Boy (Jeremes Jet-Greenwich Girl) parked to the quarter pole in :30.1 before forging to the top and supplying splits of 1:00.1 and 1:30 en route to a 1-1/4 lengths triumph in 1:58.4 for driver Chris Christoforou. The colt, who hangs his harness bag in the barn of trainer Dave Menary, was a $66,000 purchase from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale. He is just the second foal out of a half-sister to last year’s Metro Pace winner, Mystician (1:50.2 - $1,061,670).

Tarport Baccarat (Bettors Delight-Never In Paris) was limbed out past the quarter pole in :30.3, but he brushed to the top and successfully chopped out fractions of 1:01 and 1:30.4 en route to a half-length decision in 1:59.3 for driver Jody Jamieson and trainer Dave Menary. The filly, who was a $66,000 purchase out of last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, is a full sister to the sub-1:50 winner, Mr Apples (1:49 - $668,808).

Daniel Semalu (Modern Art-Coqueluche Semalu) was a winner in his second qualifying attempt for the team of driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Rene Dion. The colt was parked wide past the opening quarter in :30.3, but he eventually worked his way to the top and supplied splits of :59.3 and 1:28.3 before storming home in :28.4 to stop the teletimer in 1:57.2. The homebred is the first foal out of a full sister to the multiple stakes winner Style Semalu (1:51 - $438,309).

Driving Miss Deo (Lis Mara-Rapid Reanne) gave the tandem of driver Randy Waples and trainer Dave Menary another winner during the Friday morning session of qualifiers. The filly sat fourth to the quarter pole before sprinting to the lead and supplying middle panels of 1:00.3 and 1:31. She kicked into another gear at the head of the lane, however, and used her :28.1 final frame to win by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:59.1. The $9,000 Harrisburg Yearling Sale purchase is the first foal out of her $222,000-winning dam.

Machal Angelo (Mach Three-Island Hussy) was the fastest winner on Friday morning thanks to his 1:55.2 tour of the Campbellville oval. J.R. Plante mapped out the winning trip for the Ken Switzer trainee, who wound up drawing off to win by 3-1/2 lengths in what was his second qualifying effort. The $30,000 purchase from last year’s Forest City Yearling Sale has a trio of $100,000-winning siblings including Island Zeeker (1:54.2 - $431,718.)
