Five divisions of the City of London Series for colt and gelding pacers were contested on Monday at Western
Fair Raceway, with each division worth $9,000 .
The opening split went to Seeyanthefunnys, a three-year-old son of Grinfromeartoear – Allamerican Motion colt, who front-stepped to a 1:57.3 victory over Lyons Horace and Putnam Jaguar for trainer Bob Young and driver Ross Battin. It was the second win of the season in four tries for the pacer, who has banked just over $26,000 to date for the partnership of Not So Nice Stable, Alvin Storey, James Padgett and Beverley McGrath.
Brad Forward clicked with the Sandra Spencer-trained St Lads Adonis in the second division. The three-year-old son of Western Terror – Love Strings survived a first-over trip to defeat E Dees Legacy and Terror Of Thetrack in 1:57.2. It was a career-best clocking for the gelding, who found the winner’s circle for the third time this season in just five tries. Owned and bred by St Lads Farm of Ruscom Station, ON, St Lad Adonis has banked more than $21,000 to date.
Also winning despite being asked to do the first-over work was Call To See, who posted a three-quarter length decision over Machness in a time of 1:59.1 for trainer Wayne Preszcator and driver Doug McNair. King Pete rounded out the top three. The three-year-old son of Western Terror – Southwind Saphire is now 2-for-8 this season for owner Jeffrey Brooks of Boca Raton, FL.
McNair was back to victory lane the very next race with Dodgy Dealer, who went coast-to-coast in 1:58.3. The three-year-old son of Aces N Sevens – Beat The Boys GB, who was sent off as the heavy favourite, defeated Sign Of Fame and Tapioca Blues. Gary Bond of Acton, ON owns and trains the gelding, who picked up his third win of the 2009 campaign. He pushed his cash stash over $19,000 with the victory.
The final division went to Great Luck, who drew off to an impressive win in a career-best clocking of 1:57.2 for the duo of trainer Don Beatson and driver Mike Sumner. The three-year-old son of E Dees Cam – Direct Bride showed no mercy to runner-up Montanez and third-place finisher Final Melody. Beatson shares ownership on the gelding with Ken Beatson of Toronto and Sandra and Ralph Pitt of Cargill, ON. It was the first win of the season, and the second lifetime score, for the career winner of $13,942.
The second leg of the City of London Series goes next Monday at Western Fair Raceway, with the $40,000 (added) final to follow on Friday, June 19.
