David Kelly put the pedal to the metal with Western Summit when the starting gate sped away, and the Jim Marino pupil never looked back en route to a narrow triumph in Monday’s $12,000 Fillies & Mares Open at Fraser Downs.
Leaving from Post 2, Kelly hustled Western Summit to the lead and they zipped through fractions of :28, :57.3 and 1:26.2 before using a :28.4 closing quarter to fend off stablemate – and race favourite – Moosette by a nose in 1:55.1. In High Cotton was a lapped-on third in the five-mare affair.
Sent off at odds of 5-1, the six-year-old daughter of Vertical Horizon-Kismet Killean nabbed her sixth win of the season and the 12th of her career. Marino owns the career winner of $91,482.
Armycaptin Hanover hasn’t been to the winner’s circle since just before Valentine’s Day, but snapped out of his slump with a 1:53.1 triumph in the $10,000 Horse & Gelding Open.
Trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt rolled the six-year-old son of Captaintreacherous-Allamerican Coed to the lead from Post 3 and together they sliced out fractions of :26.2, :57.1 and 1:25.3 before using a :27.3 final frame to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Kootenay Santanna. Mach Steady rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, the gelding improved his 2022 record to 2-4-5 from 12 trips to the track. The career winner of $161,351 is owned by Hoerdt and partner Blair Corbeil. It was one of three training wins on the 14-race card for conditioner Kelly Hoerdt.
