It wasn’t a good night for the favourites in Monday’s set of OSS Gold Series divisions for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Stormont Ventnor miscued early and finished up the track as the 3-2 favourite in the opening division, and heavily-favoured Perfetto was no better in his split. Sent off as the even-money choice, the popular youngster made a break in the backstretch and never managed to regroup.
Jula Downton turned a two-hole trip into a career-best clocking of 1:54.3 in Thursday’s triumph at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Joey Bats shot to the lead from the rail and supplied the field with fractions of :28.2, :57.4 and 1:26.4 before kicking home in :27.3 to win by a pair of lengths over Run Director in 1:54.3. The third prize went to hard used.
Sent off at odds of 13-1, the son of Kadabra-Abbey Craig more than doubled his purse earnings thanks to his score for driver Louis Philippe Roy in the $97,200 division. Trainer Suzie Kerwood watched the gelding win for the second time in his career. He’s owned by Karljohan Blank of Delray Beach, FL.
Tinas Majesty also enjoyed a ground-saving trip for trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen on the rail for a good portion of Monday evening’s card.
Henriksen got away third with the son of Majestic Son-Contessa Del Monto, and they held that position through the opening half and a bit of the backstretch. At that point, the son of Majestic Son-Contessa Del Monte grabbed cover on the way to the three-quarter pole, and once she passed that post she kicked home in :29.1 to win by a nose in 1:55. Winning American was next best, with the third prize going to Spring Holliday.
Sent off at odds of 9.2, the gelding now boasts a 3-2-0 record from seven trips to the track for owner/breeder Shelley Racing Stables of Omemee, Ont. The lion’s share of the loot lifted the trotter’s overall purse haul to $64.800.
