Mohawk Racetrack held just five qualifying dashes during its Friday, May 22 morning session, but for the second week in a row, driver John Campbell was out mixing it up over the seven-eighths-mile Campbellville oval.
Campbell was up behind Bob McIntosh homebred Thinkofagameplan in the first dash. Campbell and three-year-old Ponder colt proved the best from Post 1, as they cut all the fractions (:28.3, :59, 1:27.4) and hit the wire first in 1:56, more than four lengths the best.
Race 3 saw the 2015 charted debut of the seven-year-old Kadabra mare China Pearls. Pilot Randy Waples was up behind the Carmen Hie-trained and owned mare. The O’Brien Award winning distaffer started from Post 3, cut all the fractions (:29.1, :58.2, 1:28.1) and went on to post a one-length victory in 1:56.
Race 4 housed a bit of an interesting field, as Pepsi North America Cup hopeful Go Daddy Go (driven by John Campbell) faced off against six foes, which included O’Brien Award winner Precocious Beauty (Doug McNair) and millionaire Santanna Blue Chip (Jody Jamieson). But it was a bit of a lesser-known competitor, the NA Cup-eligible Drachan Hanover, who roared the loudest.
Go Daddy Go, Precocious Beauty and Santanna Blue Chip occupied the front end of the field through the opening fractions (:27.3, :57.1, 1:25.4), but it was the Marcel Barrieau-trained and Rick Zeron-driven Drachan Hanover who scooped up all the marbles in the lane. The three-year-old Jeremes Jet colt closed from fourth and posted a one-length win in 1:53.1. Drachan Hanover has been pegged as the 32-1 thirteenth choice in Trot Magazine's 2015 NA Cup Spring Book.
