Trotting mare Just One Day and pacer Kendal Gustav shared the spotlight at Western Fair Raceway on Wednesday night with wins in a pair of Preferred 3 events.
Coming into the evening's $7,000 Preferred 3 Trot with a month between starts, David Holliday trainee Just One Day upset the popular pacesetter, Winzel (Nick Steward), as she pulled the pocket down the stretch and nabbed the victory in a photo finish. The time of the mile was 1:58.3. Oaklea Sydney (Trevor Henry) finished nearly two lengths behind in third.
Ryan Holliday drove the eight-year-old daughter of Earl to her first win of the season for owner/breeder Graham Jackson of Listowel, Ont.
Just One Day paid $17 to win as the 7-1 fourth choice in the field of seven.
Favourite Kendal Gustav dominated the matching $7,000 Preferred 3 for pacers with a 1:55.1 front-end performance. Driven by Lorne House, the five-year-old Life Sign gelding made a quarter pole move to assume command and drew off to win by nearly four lengths over Slots Of Fun (Garrett Rooney) and Rock N Go (Scott Wray).
Trainer Scott McNiven co-owns the winner with Thomas Brodhurst of London, Ont. and Shirley Griffin of St. Thomas, Ont.
Kendal Gustav, who earned his fifth victory of the season from 16 starts, returned $4.80 to his backers.
