Hanover Raceway kicked off its 2010 season on Saturday night and it was the Trevor Henry night, as the Arthur native won a total of five times on the 12-race card
including the opener with Amigo Loco, owned by trainer Ron Molendyk and Robert Burgess of Campbellville, ON, in 2:05. The three-year-old trotter won his first start in seven attempts.
Henry also won Race 7 with favourite Lady Terror in 1:59.3 for trainer Shaun McDonald, and finished the night with victories in Race’s 10-12 aboard Casimir Homeboy (2:00.4) for Ruth Moore, Haulin Oars (1:57.3) and Richlyn Hugh (1:57), both for John Stergiou.
The feature race of the night was Race 8, the Wil Weatherall Pace. Wil is celebrating his 80th birthday on Monday, and still trains and jogs horses on a daily basis. Many of his family and friends gathered with him in the winner's circle as Really Ideal won his race in the night's fastest time, 1:55.1. Really Ideal was driven by Stuart Sowerby and is owned and trained by Dominic Agostino of Welland, ON.
General Manager Gord Dougan says a big crowd enjoyed the showing of the Kentucky Derby and our opening night Prime Rib Buffet. He adds, the opening night handle was $5,000 better than opening day in 2009 and he attributed that to the much better weather, than compared to last May.
Hanover Raceway celebrates Mothers Day next Saturday night with Ladies Night. Several prizes will be given out to ladies in attendance including a trip to the Dolce Vita Spa, and gift baskets from the Flower Shoppe and Greenhouses in Hanover. Post time Saturday May 8 is 7:15 p.m.
