Clinton Raceway kicked off its 2024 racing season on Sunday, May 19 with a 10-race card as the Ontario half-mile oval played host to both huge crowds and beautiful weather.
With more than 2,000 in attendance, race fans from across Southwestern Ontario gathered to celebrate the return to the Huron County oval and pushed just shy of $65,000 through the mutuel windows. The fans witnessed Travis Henry get the 2024 racing season underway in style, leading the driving colony with three victories on the card, while J Harris, Scott Wray and Todd Ratchford each picked up two wins on the day. Trainer Courtney Robson led the way on the training side of things, picking up two victories with Lisas All In and Checkerswithgrandpa.
The season opener also featured a trackside fundraiser for local high school, Central Huron Secondary School, and through the efforts of a 50/50, bake sale, silent auction, BBQ and race sponsors, the event was able to raise $6,000.
“We are so grateful to be able to host this annual fundraiser at the track,” said Leigh Melady, States Coordinator and guidance department member. “We want to thank all those that supported our efforts this year and in years past.”
Fans were also treated to two on track performances by the Cutting Edge Cowgirls, a premier mounted drill team from Mitchell, Ont.
Live harness racing resumes on Sunday, May 26 with the annual 50+ Day and a fundraiser for The Wingham Ironmen. Fans who are of at least 50 years of age can register on the Clinton Raceway website for a $12 race package that includes $5 wager, program and lunch.
