Ireland's Prime Minister Brian Cowen has been quoted as saying that he is in support of introducing a licensing system and taxing overseas online betting websites
.
An article on tax-news.com states that at a recent dinner Cowen said that such regulation would extend the tax regime for the betting industry to all those which provide online and telephone betting.
He was quoted as saying that the move would underpin funding for the racing industry.
"Betting must be brought within the tax net, not just because it will increase revenue, but also because it will mean that those not contributing to securing the future of important indigenous industries will make that contribution," said Cowen.
