Solid Qualifier Over ‘Sloppy’ Going

Spring was in full effect during Mohawk Racetrack’s Monday (May 1) qualifying session, as unrelenting rain led to a ‘sloppy’ track that was rated three second slow. Although the conditions were anything but pristine, a North America Cup eligible went out and paced to a solid 1:54.2 victory, which was the fastest win time of the seven-race session.

The colt that got the job done was Somebeachsomewhere bay Hurricane Beach, the $230,000 yearling buy that was putting in the first charted mile of his ‘glamour boy’ season.

Louis Philippe Roy was in the bike for trainer Luc Blais, and the duo lined up in Post 6 for Race 5. The young pilot timed the gate and was off best of all, as Hurricane Beach crossed over and was first won to the opening call in :28.2.

Roy and Hurricane Beach weren’t headed through the middle splits, as the pair frozen the half-mile timer in :58 and tripped three quarters in 1:26.3.

Hurricane Beach had a three and a half-length lead at the head of the lane. He completed his mile by coming home with a :27.4 final quarter and stopping the clock in 1:54.2.

Machin A Trick (driven by Jody Jamieson) and Makasi (James MacDonald) finished second and third, respectively.

Owned by the Determination stable of Montreal, QC, Hurricane Beach has been gauged as a 90-1 longshot in Trot Magazine’s 2017 N.A. Cup Spring Book.

The other victorious horses during the morning session were Leafs And Wings (1:57.2), Southwind Tesla (1:59.2), Loves Angel (1:58.2), Pingaling (2:02.1), Windsun Revenge (1:56.2) and Stylish Beachwhere (1:56.3)
