Seven three-year-old colts and geldings lined up behind the gate to contest the $23,000 Sandown Plate final on Friday at Fraser Downs. Leading from start to finish, Camblazer prevailed in a career best clocking of 1:55.2
.
Driver Gerry Hudon put the Camcracker colt on the lead right from the get-go ahead of elimination winner and post time favourite Primary Purpose (Rod Therres). Camblazer showed the way to the quarter in :27.3 where Lil Be Dazzeld (Kelly Hoerdt) brushed up for the challenge from fourth. That one applied pressure through the middle panels of :58.2 and 1:26.3 as his stablemate Lil Western Dude (Scott Knight) attempted a three-wide move. After taking a few rough steps at the third quarter pole, Camblazer straightened up and pressed on. Using a :28.4 final frame, Camblazer shook off his challengers and coasted to victory by three and three-quarter lengths.
Primary Purpose was the runner-up with Lil Be Dazzeld and Lil Western Dude finishing third and fourth. Bo Knows Power (Bill Davis), who won his elimination last week, stepped off stride going around the final turn and finished at the back of the pack.
David Hudon trains Camblazer, a winner of three races and nearly $50,000, for owner and breeder Bill Boden of Vancouver, B.C.
In other action, Bill Davis enjoyed a training triple on the 11-race program after Laftilucry (1:59.3, Race 4), Red Star Kash (1:54.4, Race 7) and Inspired Art (1:55.1, Race 9) prevailed in their respective assignments.
