Slight Touch gave way to Windsun Stetson early on, but reclaimed the lead right before the wire for a 12-1 upset in the $6,650 Winners Over Handicap Pace on Sunday night (April 3) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Windsun Stetson (Ted McDonald) overtook early leader Slight Touch and Guy Gagnon past the :27.2 quarter mark and went unchallenged through middle splits of :55.3 and 1:24.4 as 8-5 favourite Racing For Space (Jacques Beaudoin) made little progress first over. But down the stretch, Slight Touch came back on and wore down Windsun Stetson for the half-length victory in 1:54 flat. Slight Touch returned $27.70 to win as the longest shot on the toteboard. Canadian Edition (Richard Simard) finished third.
The win was the six-year-old gelding's second this year in seven starts and first since being claimed for $12,000 on January 31 by Catheline Pelletier of Mirabel, Que. The son of Badlands Hanover finds himself back in the care of horseman Gerard Demers, who previously trained him for seven months between 2014 and 2015.
Slight Touch is a 27-time career winner with earnings over $190,000.
