A Tom Durkin-less Derby?

Published: April 26, 2011 05:40 pm EDT

Tom Durkin has decided to step down from being NBC's voice of the Kentucky Derby and the two remaining legs of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown – the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes

.

For many fans it has to feel like turkey dinner with no stuffing, or peanut butter with no jam. Can you imagine the Little Brown Jug with no Roger Huston?

“It’s just the stress got to be too much,” Durkin told the Daily Racing Form. “When you’re walking around with a pit in your stomach for three months a year, just a general bad feeling and nervousness. You look up stress in the dictionary or online, and I’m a classic case of it. Sometimes you have to look out for your professional life; more importantly, you have to look out for your personal life. This is a bad professional decision and a good personal one.”

A replacement has yet to be named.

A terribly sad day in the racing world...Tom Durkin is BY FAR the greatest race caller of all time !

"Say it ain't so Tom, say it ain't so !"

Stress? Has to be more to this story. I'm sure it isn't the easiest job, but too stressful calling a big race? I thought that's what good race callers looked forward to every year.
