According to a story in Wednesday’s edition of The Intelligencer, Baymount Inc. is set to apply to the ORC for 17 race dates at Quinte Raceway

.

According to Ray Veeneman, Baymount Inc.’s vice president of Operations, the application to race at the old Quinte Exhibition and Raceway at the corner of Sidney Street and Bridge Street West could be submitted as early as Thursday.

“We do intend to race this year,” Veeneman told The Intelligencer. “To be fair to the ORC, we had to have our ducks in a row and we haven’t submitted that application yet. We are waiting to receive some documents and we hope to file our application (Thursday).”

It is too bad they don't actually apply what is being said.

“We treat racetracks equally under the legislature,” Blakney said referring to the Racing Commission Act. “We require a business plan from the applicant to demonstrate the wherewithal to conduct racing for the number of race dates they have applied for.”

Included in that business plan must be assurances that the facility hosting the racing events meets standards that are uniform across the province.

“Issues of public safety, the safety of the horses and the safety of the participants and so on would not be compromised in any way,” Blakney said.

All you need to do is look at the tracks in Woodstock, Dresden and Windsor to see that there are different sets of rules. These three tracks are certainly maintained to the same standard, the only problem is, that this standard is at the bottom of the barrel. These places while once nice facilities are disgraceful and the ORC does nothing about it. They continue to allow the Owner to ruin the racing and reap the beneifts of slot revenue while not returning any money to upgrade the racing. If you truely want racing to survive then we must fix up the racetracks to attract new customers, and get the old ones back. The ORC has the authority and the ability to hold back the slot revenue until the operator brings the facilities up to a respectable standard, (ORCs standards that they have set out). Is that too much to ask ORC????
