"He's a bit of a handful in the paddock and likes to climb fences so we wanted him turned out inside. And he actually figured out how to open the door to get outside."
The countdown to the 2017 Pepsi North America Cup is on, with Trot Magazine profiling the horses predicted to be the top contenders for Canadian harness racing's richest prize.
At 10-1, Sports Column comes in at #3 in Trot Magazine's 2017 Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book.
One of two Ontario Sired colts to crack the top 10, Sports Column (Sportswriter - Lady Leslie) won four of six starts at two and never finished worse than second. The colt started the year owned by trainer Blake MacIntosh and Joe Thomson's Hutt Racing Stable, and added Daniel Plouffe as a co-owner midway through his rookie season. Never finishing worse than second (by a mere neck on both occasions), the Battle Of Waterloo winner banked $220,000 for his connections.
A son of 2010 North America Cup winner Sportswriter, Sports Column is MacIntosh's first NA Cup eligible.
"We're really excited. You always dream of being in that race, it's your local race. You want to win and want to be in it. I've been in the winner's circle once before but I'd like it to be with one of my own. Hopefully we can get there."
In late March Trot Insider visited MacIntosh at Meadowbranch Training Centre for an up-close and personal look at Sports Column.
