Brian West, radio host at Y108, turned on his announcing voice during the third race at Flamboro Downs on Sunday evening for another round of Announcer Idol.
As pacers Comeonandgetsome and Nephin battled back and forth on top for most of the mile, West made light of the challenges a newbie faces in the booth while calling the action in his version of an announcer's accent.
"This looks like it's pretty tight here with four, Comeonandgetsome, and the other guy that's right beside him...If only the horse would get out of the way I could see who it is...Oh there, it is number seven, Nephin! They are neck and neck!"
As the field turned for home, West hollared, "Boy, here we go! The top of the stretch...Is this the home stretch? What kind of stretch is it? I don't know, but it's about to come to a very close, tight end."
Comeonandgetsome gained the slight lead while favourite Ziggy Sky fanned wide, but the pocket-sitting Summons shot up the passing lane to prevail in 1:59.4. Comeonandgetsome stayed for second while Ziggy Sky finished third over Nephin.
Summons paid $7 to win as the 5-2 second choice.
Mark McCormack trains and owns the four-year-old Ponder gelding while four-time Sunday winner Jody Jamieson guided him to victory lane.
In other action, Money Maven ($7.50) and trainer/driver Daniel O'Brian won the $7,000 Preferred 3 Trot just prior to the Announcer Idol race in 2:01.4 for owner Everette Hanson of Maugerville, N.B.
There are just two more Announcer Idol races left in the competition. Flamboro Downs will welcome Jason Portuondo (Sports, CHCH) to the booth next Sunday, March 16, followed by Scott Penfold (Middays, Y108) on March 23.
Fans and patrons will get to vote for their favourite race call at the end of the month and the winning announcer will receive a donation to the local charity of their choice, courtesy of Flamboro Downs and Great Canadian Gaming.
