Outlawgrabbingears cruised to a very handy win in Monday’s $13,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 2 Handicap at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and that makes it back-to-back triumphs in the top class for the five-year-old son of Smart Shark-Grand Slam Woman.
In rein to trainer/driver Paul Davies, Outlawgrabbingears sprinted to the lead from Post 6 and never looked back. The gelding powered through fractions of :27.3, :56.4 and 1:25.3 before using a :28.4 final quarter to win by 5-1/4 lengths over Easton Beach in 1:54.2. Cheddar Bay rounded out the Trifecta ticket in the six-horse affair.
Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, Outlawgrabbingears made it 24 wins from 51 starts for owners Paul & Nicole Davies and Deborah Pinel. The pacer recently surpassed $300,000 in career earnings.
Refi used a come-from-behind approach for driver Nick Steward en route to capturing the $13,000 Preferred 2 Handicap for trotters.
Steward got away fifth in the six-horse affair with the Ben Baillargeon trainee while Willyorwonthe powered to the top and chopped out splits of :28, :58.3 and 1:28.1. Sizzlen Hot Herbie applied first-over pressure on the leader on the way to the three-quarter pole and Refi managed to move up and track that cover from second over. Refi then tipped and drove home in :29.4 to win by 2-3/4 lengths over race favourite Power And Grace in 1:58.3. Sizzlen Hot Herbie was third.
Sent off at odds of 3-1, the five-year-old son of Chapter Seven-Blazing Musclegirl nabbed his first win of the season and the 15th of his career. The career winner of over $180,000 is owned by Ben Baillargeon, Claude Hamel and Santo & Nunzio Vena.
Pedro Hanover was a coast-to-coast winner for driver Colin Kelly and trainer Kyle Bossence in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3.
Kelly hustled the six-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere-Paulas Best to the lead from Post 1 and together they successfully led the group through fractions of :28, :57.3 and 1:26.2 before storming home in :28.4 to win by 4-1/2 lengths over Moonwriter in 1:55.1. Rounding out the top three finishers was Mercenary.
Sent off as the 1-5 choice in the eight-horse tilt, Pedro Hanover is now two-for-two to start the 2021 season for owner Brad Gray of Dundas, Ont. The 12-time winner recently surpassed $450,000 in lifetime earnings.
