Andre Drolet, who passed away in hospital in Levis, Que., on Sunday at age 71, was “a great friend” to horse racing in Quebec, the man who succeeded him as head of the province’s regional racing circuit has said. Also, details regarding arrangements for Drolet have been announced.
Paul-Andre Lavigne said Drolet was in many ways a visionary, and the fact the provincial fair circuit is still going in 12 locations attests to it.
Lavigne noted that Drolet literally drafted the rules of racing in the province, during a period when he worked as director of racing for the provincial racing agency, La Regie des Alcools, des Courses et des Jeux.
“He was very articulate and became a voice for many of the racing associations in Quebec,” Lavigne said.
Drolet was also a breeder and trainer, and even drove in races, initially at the long-defunct Sherbrooke racetrack. Right to the end, he raised horses at his farm in St. Charles de Bellechasse, near Quebec City.
Visitation for Andre Drolet will be held Saturday, March 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Cooperative Funeraire de Deux-Rives, 154 Rue du Mont-Marie, Levis, with a religious reading to follow at 3:00 p.m.
He is survived by his spouse Sonia Cote, two children and a stepson and three grandchildren.
