According to a report on hour.ca, the CDN community council, a coalition of 45 local groups, are rallying against the proposed plan which would see Hippodrome de Montreal
converted into what is be dubbed a mini-casino.
The article states that community groups which promote affordable housing have long spoken out about the lack of affordable housing in the area. The community groups state that 40 per cent of residents in the area live in poverty.
"One in four people in Côte-des-Neiges spends more than 50 per cent of their income on rent, a situation likely to worsen with the economic crisis," François Saillant of FRAPRU was quoted as saying.
"The population in Côte-des-Neiges is dense and there is a lack of space for construction. The Blue Bonnets racetrack site provides a huge opportunity to build lots of public housing," Saillant said.
