It has been announced that nine of the 17 Truro Raceway employees that were laid off last month have been rehired.
News of the development comes courtesy of a report by the Truro Daily News which has cited Truro Harness Horse Owners Association President Steve Morton as saying that more than half of the 17 employees had been rehired.
The layoffs, which took place on February 23, came as part of a move to separate the track's operations from the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Commission (NSPE).
“We’re doing as well as we can in the circumstances. As we go through the financial situation we’ll make our decision as to who we can hire and who we can’t,” the Truro Daily News has quoted Morton as saying.
“But if we are able to hire all the people back, we will do that.”
Morton said that the individuals that have been hired back include a race secretary, a bookkeeper, a maintenance worker and a total of six individuals that deal with pari-mutuel wagering both on and offsite.
Live racing is scheduled to return to Truro Raceway on Friday, April 27.
