Big Boys Edge shook loose on the last turn and swooped to victory over a wet-fast track in the featured $30,137 conditioned claiming trot at Miami Valley Raceway on Tuesday, Mar. 3.
In the early goings, Caviar Creek (Tyler Smith) fired out to the lead and took the field past the opening quarter in :27.1. Parked to the first station, Unhinged (Austin Hanners) pressed on to take over near the tote board, leaving A Million Dances (David Miller) uncovered and now in charge of the outer flow. The eventual winner, driven by Sam Widger, got away fourth initially but was shuffled back to sixth on the inside by the half in :56.3.
The order remained unchanged up the backside as Unhinged led while Caviar Creek remained in the pocket with A Million Dances stalling first-up at three-quarters in 1:25.2. Caviar Creek popped the pocket and began to challenge Unhinged on the final turn, and Mister Sweet (Luke Hanners) slid three-wide from third while Big Boys Edge followed him to a four-wide move. As Unhinged and Caviar Creek battled stride-for-stride down the lane, Big Boys Edge came flying up on the outside to win by a half-length in 1:55.1. Caviar Creek edged out Unhinged for second.
The win was the first of the year in eight starts for Big Boys Edge, who is trained by Carl Newland for Hartley Farms Inc. The six-year-old son of Sharp Edge-Yourcomindown is now 10-for-55 lifetime. He paid $14.60 to win.
Chris Page led all drivers with three wins on the 14-race card, two of them for trainer Ron Burke, who led the conditioners.
Racing returns to Miami Valley on Wednesday with a post time of 4 p.m.
