J Harris piloted Corey Johnson trainee Don McWhite -- the second-longest shot on the board -- to a 12-1 upset in the $11,500 Preferred 2 Handicap Pace on Tuesday (March 27) at The Raceway at Western Fair District, as the son of Mcardle produced a wire-to-wire win in 1:54.3.
Leading through a :28.1 opening quarter, Don McWhite held an uncontested lead through a :57.4 half and three-quarters in 1:25.3. The Loan Ranger, the longest shot on the board, drafted in the pocket until turning for home, popping wide of Don McWhite but coming a half length from victory. Rebel Voyager, tipping off the rail around the final turn, finished third.
Winning his fourth race in eight starts this season and his 18th in 66 overall, Don McWhite, owned by Corey Johnson and Sergis Racing Stable LLC, paid $26.20 to win.
Sr Beach Babe, sent the 6-5 favourite, won the $8,500 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace going first over in 1:57.
From post 7, Maxim Seelster shot to the top, leading Pinky Tuscadero and Sr Beach Babe through a :28.2 opening quarter. Driver Louis-Philippe Roy tipped the Craig Gilmour trainee off the rail heading to the half, pursuing Maxim Seelster through a :58.2 half and drawing alongside after three-quarters in 1:27.2.
Taking the lead into the stretch, Sr Beach Babe led by a length and a half. Pinky Tuscadero, off a pocket trip, weaved into second, finishing two lengths off the winner. Big Lis, riding cover third over, rallied for third.
A five-year-old mare by Oaks Enforcer out of the Jennas Beach Boy mare Sand On The Beach, Sr Beach Babe, owned by Steve Mihalic, won her second race in 10 starts this season and her 16th in 94 overall, earning $135,840. She paid $4.60 to win.
