In the wake of the announcement of the demise of Harness Racing PEI, Wes Sheridan, the minister responsible for harness racing in the province of Prince Edward Island, has commented on the former organization and future in the province going forward
.
An article by Nicholas Oakes in today's edition of The Guardian cited Sheridan as saying that HRPEI was not broken, but the entire operating model was.
“They constantly ran into walls inside their own silo. Now everything will be seamless,” Sheridan was quoted as saying.
In the near future, once a transitional period in complete, all operations will be guided by the Red Shores facility, under the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
“As you see the game is struggling in many areas,” Sheridan said. “Our sister provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are hurting mightily, but when you look to home at this, hopefully we can take this model to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and make our whole game stronger. We’ve been driving this game for almost 10 years now. If it wasn’t for PEI and the support of the government, harness racing would be all but over in these three provinces.”
