During the card of harness racing at The Meadows on Wednesday, March 19, a number of horses and drivers were involved in an accident that sent one participant to hospital and prompted a cancellation of racing at the Pennsylvania oval for the remainder of the week.
Approaching the three-quarter mark of the afternoon's 11th dash, race leader Uptown Callie made a break in stride for driver Dave Palone that caused a chain reaction with interference to the trailing horses.
Dandys Starlette (Jeremy Indof), Crystal Sands (Aaron Merriman), Louie The Lilac (Case Bateson), Lorraine J (Brady Brown) and Always B Royalty (Hunter Myers) did not finish the race. All loose horses were caught, and all the horses walked off under their own power as did drivers Indof, Merriman, Bateson and Brown.
Hunter Myers, the driver of Always B Royalty, was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries after being thrown from the sulky. Trot Insider will provide updates on Myers once official details become available.
The last two races on Wednesday's card were cancelled as a result of the accident. Officials with the Meadows Standardbred Owners Association announced late Wednesday that the previously scheduled cards of harness racing slated for Thursday, March 20 and Friday, March 21 have been cancelled "out of respect to the Meadows racing community."
