On Wednesday, March 9, the Greater Atlantic City Chamber issued a release saying that it is against the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce's proposal to expand gaming at the Meadowlands entertainment complex
.
A report on pressofatlanticcity.com cites Greater Atlantic City Chamber Chairman Ken Calemmo as saying in the release that, "Any plan that involves casino gaming in New Jersey outside of Atlantic City contradicts the direction and the vision that Governor (Chris) Christie has set forth and that the Legislature has endorsed. Public policy should not be changed each time a region of our state sees fit to come up with a new plan."
On Monday, February 28, the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce announced its proposal to redevelop the Meadowlands Sports Complex with a new casino, convention centre, conference centre, six hotels, and a recommendation of a water park, spa, theatre and museum.
An article on northjersey.com cites Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce spokesman Ron Simocini as saying, "Significant policy and legislative activity would have to occur before a casino could be built in the Meadowlands and then there is a construction period. Our view of that, the seven or eight years it would take for that facility to open will tell us about Atlantic City's situation. Atlantic City will either be over by then or it would have recovered by then and building something in the Meadowlands has nothing to do practically with whether or not the Atlantic City can succeed or not."
