How much do you figure the dam of Horse of the Year JK Shesalady and North America Cup winner JK Endofanera would sell for if she went through an auction today? Whatever that figure could be, it would surely be more than the $450 she fetched in the ring two winters ago.
After speaking with longtime horseman Ed Zubkoff Jr., D'Arcy Egan of The Plain Dealer has written a piece regarding Zubkoff’s shrewd purchase and the subsequent interest that Presidential Lady has attracted.
"I sure didn't know much about Presidential Lady when I bought her two years ago, but everyone in the business does now," Zubkoff told Egan. "I get calls almost every day about her. A guy recently made a serious offer of $100,000 for her."
In the broodmare ranks, Presidential Lady has raised her profile significantly courtesy of the U.S. and Canadian Horse of the Year JK Shesalady and North America Cup winner JK Endofanera. The former went undefeated (12 for 12) during her 2014 juvenile campaign and banked over $931,000 in purses, while the latter won 10 of his 20 three-year-old starts in 2014 and banked more than $1.1 million during the past season.
As Egan explains, Zubkoff purchased the then-18-year-old Presidential Lady in February of 2013 before she was seen as a grand producer of high-end Standardbred talent. The horseman was quoted as saying that she was "a beautiful mare in excellent shape," and, based off of that, he decided to hand over the minor sum in order to bring the bay into his operation.
The story explains that eight months after purchasing Presidential Lady, Zubkoff was delighted to hear announcers at the Meadowlands Racetrack citing the mare as the dam of the Governors Cup winner, JK Endofanera, who had powered his way to a 1:51.4 win in the $534,500 stakes event.
Egan’s piece goes on to state that Presidential Lady, now 20 years of age, has since produced a colt by The Panderosa and that she is expected to drop another The Panderosa foal “any day now.” He also said that he plans to breed her to Art Major this coming December.
