Pacing mare Cheyenne Robin finished up her 2015 campaign with a bang, and it’s been more of the same for the distaffer since the calendar flipped over to 2016.
The Robbie Siegelman trainee has been no worse than second in her last seven starts thanks to an impressive triumph in Tuesday’s $20,000 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap at Dover Downs.
Corey Callahan mapped out the winning trip for Cheyenne Robin, who was allowed to settle into the five-hole before coming first-over on pacesetting Scandalicious. She took the field through fractions of :26, :55.4 and 1:23.3, but she couldn’t fend off the relentless pressure of Cheyenne Robin. Callahan coaxed :27.4 closing speed from Cheyenne Robin and that was enough to earn her the head decision over the pocket-sitting Springforth in 1:51.2. Scandalicious was a lapped-on third.
Sent off as the 6-5 choice, Cheyenne Robin now boasts a 2-1-0 record in her first three starts of the season after going 8-8-1 from 32 trips to the track last season. The 12-time winner bumped her overall bankroll to $178,414 with the win. The homebred races for New York partners Eli Oxenhorn and GRJ Partners.
