Surrounded by the love of her family at her bedside, longtime harness racing industry participant Jean Sheppard of Dundas, Ont. passed away on Feb. 9, 2025 at the age of 92.

Jean is predeceased by her parents, Jack and Mary Rannie. She leaves behind her cherished four boys: Tod (Robyn), Paul (Sharon), Brian, and Kelly, along with her much-loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Ben, Tanner, Cody (Sarah, Mya and Wesley), Kyle (Tayler, Watson and Tripp), Tyler (Sophia), and Jaclyn (Adam, William, and James).

Jean was incredibly proud of her family and never missed an opportunity to boast about them to anyone willing to listen. She was born and raised in Campbellford before making her way to Dundas. A devoted mother first and foremost, Jean spent countless hours at ice rinks — either figure skating in her early years or cheering on her boys as they played hockey.

Jean attended Teachers College in Toronto and taught grades one to eight while also lending a helping hand on her parents' farm during that time. She played a vital role in the success of Sheppard Racing Stables and ran the Dan Patch Tack Shop in Flamborough for many years, building a thriving business on the family farm. Her love of horses led her to a lifelong passion for raising, showing, and travelling abroad with her beloved Clydesdale horses. From the Royal Winter Fair to county fairs near and far, these experiences brought her immense joy.

Jean was always her family's biggest cheerleader and had a generous heart, always willing to help those in need.

In her later years, Jean resided at the Georgian Retirement Home in Dundas, where she was affectionately known as "the mayor." She was a cherished presence among the residents and staff, always keeping busy stocking the bistro and delivering the mail daily. There is no doubt that a big piece will be missing there without her.

As per Jean's final wishes, cremation has taken place, with a private family interment to follow at a later date. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at the Georgian for their care and companionship, as well as to the compassionate team at St. Joseph's Hospital for their guidance and support in her final days.

Donations in Jean's memory may be made to Margaret's Place Hospice.
