Rallying from last to first, Outlaw Highvoltage pulled off a 23-1 shocker in the $9,900 Open Handicap Pace at Northlands Park on Saturday afternoon.
With regular reinsman Brent Grundy aboard, Outlaw Highvoltage trailed the six-horse field early on before picking up cover in the form of his stablemate and defending Open champion Smooth Criminal and Bill Tainsh Jr.
Meanwhile, Gerry Hudon and Alberta Horse of the Year Timberline Court, returning to action as the 1-2 race favourites after being scratched sick last week, carved out fractions of :28.1, :57.4 and 1:26.3 over the 'good' surface before fading to fourth in the stretch where Outlaw Highvoltage came charging three-wide off cover.
Using a :29.4 final frame, the longshot came on for the 1:56.4 triumph by one length with pocket-sitter Mr Saratoga and John Chappell finishing second. Smooth Criminal finished one and a half lengths behind in third.
The win was the four-year-old Blue Burner gelding's second this month for trainer Doug Stout and Alberta owners Derek Stout and Clauzette Byckal. He last won a $10,000 claiming class on Feb. 2 before stepping up in competition.
Outlaw Highvoltage returned $48.70 to his backers for his first Open win.
The victory was one of two on the card for Stout. Sixdaysontheroad was his other winner with Tainsh Jr. aboard for a driving triple. Hudon won the most races on the day with four driving victories, including three for trainer Lance Ward.
