The longest shot in a talented field, Palazzo Princess followed cover patiently, peeled three-wide around the final turn and charged through the snowy lane to score a 23-1 shocker in Monday’s $25,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows
.
Palazzo Princess compiled an outstanding season last year at three when she banked more than $235,000 for Paint Creek Farms and trainer Paul Kennedy. But she usually came up short against The Meadows’ elite fillies and mares.
That changed Monday when Aaron Merriman sent her wide for the drive, and the daughter of Jate Lobell-Hawaiian Exotica responded with a final panel in :28 over a “good” surface. She scored in 1:54.2, a half length better than the rallying Shady Matilda, with the first-over Natalie third.
Dave Palone drove three winners — all for trainer Ron Burke — on the 15-race card.
