Freshly minted two-time O'Brien Award winners So Much More and James MacDonald teamed up for another moment in the spotlight on Friday night (Feb. 10) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
After being named Canada's Older Pacing Mare of the Year for the second time in her career last weekend at the 2022 O'Brien Awards, So Much More was back to her winning ways on Friday night, scoring her first victory of the season in the $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace for trainer and co-owner Don Beatson.
So Much More swept from third to first after a :29 opening quarter and led the way to the half in :57.1 then three-quarters in 1:25.1 while fending off first-over attacker Western Wish (Austin Sorrie) to score in 1:53.3. Western Wish edged out the pocketed Need To Breathe (Travis Cullen) in a photo for place, finishing three-quarters of a length behind the popular winner.
Sent postward as the 3-5 favourite in the field that was scratched down to five starters, So Much More paid $3.40 to win and $2.70 to place. There was no show wagering.
The seven-year-old Big Jim-Ladysai mare now boasts 58 wins and $1.25 million in career earnings for Don Beatson of Granton, Ont., Kenneth Beatson of Palgrave, Ont., and Cole England of Exeter, Ont.
