The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has named Dr. Bryce Peckham as Chief Racing Veterinarian
. Dr. Peckham has been serving in that capacity on an interim basis since October 2008. Prior to coming to Kentucky, Dr. Peckham spent the last 12 years as the chief racing veterinarian for the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission.
"Dr. Peckham has already proven to be a valuable asset to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and the industry during his short time in Kentucky,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of the KHRC. “He has already taken the initiative to make improvements in several areas in the regulatory veterinarian arena. For example, he has initiated an enhanced protocol for pre-race examinations. And, we’re impressed with his straightforward approach that has facilitated improved communications with horsemen, veterinarians and racetrack management. "
Dr. Peckham’s credentials and work ethic have also caught the attention of leaders in the racing industry.
"In the short period of time that he has been here, Dr. Peckham has impressed me with his efficiency in his day-to-day work as well as his ability to respond to unforeseen circumstances,” said John Ward, KHRC commissioner and trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos and Breeders’ Cup Champion Beautiful Pleasure. “Above all, he is sensitive to the needs of the racehorse."
Dr. Peckham is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the AAEP’s practice group of racing regulatory veterinarians.
Prior to being named Kansas’ chief racing vet, he served for seven years as senior track veterinarian at The Woodlands race course in Kansas City. He was awarded a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Kansas State University in 1988.
