McIntosh Injured, Requires Surgery

Trot Insider has learned that four-time O'Brien Award winning trainer Bob McIntosh was involved in a training accident at his farm Wednesday morning

.

“This morning my father was thrown from the jog cart when a yearling kicked and got his leg over the shaft," McIntosh's son, Rob, told Trot Insider. "He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was diagnosed with a broken pelvis. He is scheduled to undergo surgery in a week after the swelling has gone down. After that he will not be able to put any weight on it for three months."

Along with being a member of harness racing's Hall of Fame both in Canada and the U.S., McIntosh is also the leading conditioner in the history of the prestigious Breeders Crown series of races with 15 victories. Horses which hail from McIntosh's Windsor, Ontario-based operation have won nearly 3,800 races and banked more than $85 million in purse earnings.

Trot Insider will provide further updates on his condition when details are made available.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing McIntosh a speedy recovery.

Bob take care of yourself and have a safe and full recovery you r a good horseman and just like horses everything takes time to heal,so take the time you need and heal properly

Speedy recovery Bob. I know how hard it will be for you to sit still for a few months and let some of the talented people you have working for you take over - for now. Keep in mind; a self employed friend had this same injury and he did not take the time for recovery, rushed back, and returned too soon. He battled with his injury for years. Doctors always told him, if he would have followed the directions, he would have been good as new after the first six months. Please Bob, rest and heal properly or this could be a major problem. Take the time to heal my friend, and sit back and watch from the sidelines this year, it will ensure your return for next years crop.

Best and good recuperating, Bob.It was a yearling that got hung up, and the same horse will surely make amends in two years when racing as a 3 year old. Keep resting that pelvis, as a lot of pain is involved, but you will get better; just let the Doc take over for now. Cheers from all who know you.

I offer my personal prayers and best wishes to Bob for a speedy and full recovery and a return to the sport he so dearly loves . As a periodic visitor to the McIntosh Farm, I have come to realize how dedicated and involved he is on a day to day basis . He has a large group of long term ,loyal employees who will serve him well but he is the "driving" force .You will have the best of medical care and many people to support you .Get Well Soon !!

Sorry to hear the news. Good luck with the surgery and all the best for a speedy return!

I don't think there is much need to mention that Bob MacIntosh has been, and remains one of, and arguably Canada's top standardbred trainer over the past 15-20 years. When you look at the list of top horses he has trained over the years, it is almost unimaginable that someone could be so successful for so long, and continue to be on the cutting edge.
Although I don't know Bob personally, I can only imagine how difficult this must be for him. A broken pelvis isn't like a broken finger nail, it must have been excruciatingly painful. I hope it wasn't, but having broken bones in my own body, I imagine it was.
And let's not forget about being knocked out of action for potentially months. Sure he has very talented men and women working for him, but over the years he is the common denominator in the overall success of that stable.
I for one wish you a speedy and healthy recovery and hope that 2012 works out to be a great year for you and your family.
