When it comes to Secret Weapon’s racing style, it’s anything but a secret. He’s never in a hurry in the early going, but he’s closing gangbusters late in the mile
.
Driver Scott Young used the veteran’s well-know weapon to perfection in Tuesday’s $15,000 Preferred Pace at Georgian Downs, and in doing so the gelding found his way to the winner’s circle for the second consecutive week and the fourth time in his last five trips to the track.
Secret Weapon settled into sixth at the quarter pole while Just Asign To Me rolled the field past that post in :26.3. He continued to lead the way through middle panels of :55.2 and 1:23.3, with Rush Rules advancing first over and Secret Weapon tagging along behind that one’s cover.
Young flipped the switch on the nine-year-old son of Western Hanover-Falcons Secret coming out of the final turn, and the gelding used a :27.4 final frame to prevail by three-quarters of a length over longshot Cajon Thunder in 1:52.2. Rush Rules held on gamely to finish third in the nine-horse affair.
Sent off as the 2-1 favourite, the Wayne Preszcator trainee improved this year’s record to 12-0-3 in 26 starts while lifting his yearly purse haul over $100,000. Owned by the Secret Weapon Stables of Waterloo, ON, the 48-time winner has banked more than $553,000 to date.
