Riveting Rosie Vs. Older Foes

After a late season resurgence with career best form, three-year-old trotting filly Riveting Rosie has earned herself some extra work.

On Saturday night at Woodbine Racetrack, the three-year-old Muscle Mass filly will face off against the top trotters on the WEG Circuit in the $34,000 Preferred Trot. While most of the sophomores have been turned out with the long, grueling stakes season concluded, the connections of Riveting Rosie felt she was too good to shut down.

"She's been racing so well at the end of the year, it would be a shame to shut her down when she's racing so well," Matt Bax, assistant trainer in the John Bax Stable told Trot Insider. "We're going to give her a few more starts, until she tells us she's done."

In her last two starts, Riveting Rosie has been razor sharp. Although she finished fifth in her last start -- the $500,000 Breeders Crown Final -- she trotted her mile in 1:53.1. More impressive was her start heading into the Breeders Crown: a 1:53 track record performance at Woodbine.

Owned by Parkhill Stud Farm of Peterborough, Don Allensen of Wyoming, Joe Parkinson and John F. Hayes of Sharon, Ont., Riveting Rosie boasts a 5-2-2 summary from 17 sophomore starts. Her lifetime bankroll sits at more than $900,000 and if all goes well she'll have a chance to become a millionaire in 2015.

"It will be a new step for her but if she's going to be an aged horse racing next year, she's going to have to race against this competition," said Bax.

Riveting Rosie is listed as the third choice on the morning line, at odds of 7-2 with regular driver Paul MacDonell at the controls. Her main rivals on paper appear to be Daylon Magician (PP7, Jack Moiseyev, 5-2) and Charmed Life (PP4, Jody Jamieson, 3-1).

"We were pretty comfortable that she'd be competitive in there," stated Bax. "Those horses are a lot like the three-year-old fillies in the Breeders Crown so we're pretty confident that she's competitive in there. She should be alright."

Matt is handling the Canadian arm of the stable while John is taking in some warmer weather in Florida. The Bax Stable has seven horses at the Palema Trotting Center in Vero Beach: two of the stable's top two-year-olds from 2014 -- Stubborn Belle and Juanitas Fury -- as well as five yearlings.
