Despite entering Tuesday’s $12,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred feature at The Raceway at the Western Fair District with 38 lifetime wins and purse earnings in excess of $600,000, veteran distaffer Pink Kangaroo was given very little respect by the majority of the betting public.
The eight-year-old daughter of Cams Card Shark-Holy Matrimony was sent off at odds of 20-1 in the seven-horse affair, but she raced more like a 2-5 shot for the tandem of driver Ross Battin and trainer Brian Hodgson.
Pink Kangaroo ducked into the five-hole in the early going while Aint No Dollatable and Roca Rei battled through first-half fractions of :26.3 and :56.2 before being pounced on by Pink Kangaroo. Battin pulled the trigger in the backstretch with his charge who was treated to a covered-up trip behind the wicked speed. She ripped off cover and sprinted to the lead at the three-quarter marker in 1:25.3 before using a :30-second kicker to win by five lengths in an impressive time of 1:55.3 over a track rated ‘sloppy’ with a two-second variant. Misty Moonstone was second best, with Classy Lane Rose taking home third prize.
John Bell of Petrolia, ON holds the ownership papers on the classy campaigner, who improved her 2012 record to 7-5-3 from 36 starts with the win. She’s managed to stash away more than $64,000 this year, and that’s helped bring her lifetime earnings to $610,008.
