World champion trotter Southwind Tyrion has been retired from racing and will stand stud in 2025.
Southwind Tyrion 2,1:51.1; 1:49.2 -'24 ($1,214,549) will join Winbak Farm of New York's 2025 stallion lineup.
“'Tyrion' stood out as a yearling because he had a great pedigree, great video and perfect conformation,” said the trotter's trainer, driver and co-owner, Ake Svanstedt. “He is very good-gaited horse.”
Southwind Tyrion, a son of Muscle Hill out of the Cantab Hall mare Taylor Jean, is the fastest two-year-old colt trotter in harness racing history.
“When considering this stallion to stand at Winbak Farm of New York, I was impressed by his early speed,” said Joe Thomson, Winbak Farm Owner. “In today’s game, a fast and honest two-year-old is important in order to be competitive.”
At two, Southwind Tyrion won five of seven starts and set the world record for two-year-old trotting colts in an $85,600 division of the International Stallion Stakes at The Red Mile in 1:51.1 against a field that included In Range and Venerate. He also won a leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes and the $160,000 final, the $60,000 Garden State Stakes and a William Wellwood Memorial elimination (second in the final).
At five, Southwind Tyron won the $600,000 Breeders Crown (second in an elimination) against Its Academic, Rattle My Cage and Logan Park. He won the $350,000 FanDuel Championship against Tactical Approach and Its Academic. He also won the $100,000 Sebastian K Invitational and was second in the $135,000 Allerage Farms Trot.
“My favourite races of Southwind Tyrion’s were when he set the world record in the International Stallion Stakes at The Red Mile when he was two and his Open Breeders Crown win at Hoosier last year,” said Svanstedt. “'Tyrion' has a nice temperament; he loves to work and race and he is easy to handle.”
Now six, Southwind Tyrion won the $179,795 Crawford Open and was second in the $391,667 John Cashman Memorial in 2024.
In total, he earned 14 wins, five seconds and three thirds from 31 career starts.
“I think and hope that 'Tyrion' will pass on his early talent and speed to his offspring,” said Svanstedt. “I am looking forward to seeing his babies and I think he will leave his mark on them.”
“Southwind Tyrion should make a great cross for many broodmares including Chapter Seven, Conway Hall, Credit Winner and Walner mares,” said Jack Burke, Winbak Farm General Manager. “We plan on breeding some of our best trotting mares to him and are excited to see his future offspring develop.”
Southwind Tyrion will stand his introductory season for $6,000 USD at Winbak Farm of New York.
“With the purse upgrades that the New York Stakes program is receiving, Southwind Tyrion’s offspring will have a fantastic program to race in,” said Noelle Duspiva, Winbak Farm of New York Manager. “I look forward to working with 'Tyrion' and take pride in knowing that him and his mares will receive the best of care from my team and myself when they stay at Winbak Farm of New York.”
In 2023, New York voted to no longer require “in state breeding” for resulting foals to be eligible to the state's program. Mares can now be bred out of state and their resulting foals will be eligible for the program.
“Winbak Farm would like to thank the connections of Southwind Tyrion for allowing us the opportunity to stand such a high-class stallion,” said Thomson. “I am thrilled to welcome Southwind Tyrion to our lineup.”
