Standardbred Canada is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2025 O’Brien Awards, honouring Canada’s best in harness racing over the past season.

For the first time ever, there are three finalists in each category, which includes 12 divisional horse categories and five people categories. One of the divisional champions will also be recognized as the Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year.

The winners will be announced at the O’Brien Awards Gala on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026 at the J-AAR Expo Centre at Western Fair District in London, Ont.

This year marks the 37th edition of the O’Brien Awards, named in honour of the late Joe O’Brien, an outstanding horseman and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee.

The finalists in the Two-Year-Old Pacing Filly category are A Clean Deal, Daya and Windemere Skye.

A Clean Deal put together an outstanding rookie campaign, winning six of seven starts and earning $454,464 for owners Yolanda Fellows, Blair Corbeil, Windermere Stable LLC and James Ross. Trained by Kyle Fellows, the daughter of Cattlewash captured five Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold Series legs – where she set her lifetime mark (1:50) in one of those victories at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Aug. 14 before closing out the year with a win in the $300,000 OSS Super Final, further underscoring her dominance in the provincial program.

Daya had an impressive rookie season for owner/breeder/trainer Jack Darling. Competing in both the OSS program and the Grand Circuit, the Bulldog Hanover filly hit the board in 10 of 12 starts, earning $485,914 in the process. Of those 10 on-the-board finishes, five were victories, none bigger than her Canadian and track record performance in the $153,000 Battle of the Belles at Grand River Raceway, where she stopped the clock in a lifetime best of 1:50.4. Her largest purse cheque was from a runner-up finish in the $470,000 Shes A Great Lady Stakes at Mohawk, demonstrating consistency at the top level of her division.

Windemere Skye delivered a flawless rookie campaign, winning all 12 of her starts and earning nearly $125,000 for owners Windemere Farms and Matt Burke. Trained by Earl Watts, the Somewhere Fancy filly dominated the Atlantic region, capturing two P.E.I. Colt Stakes, four Atlantic Sires Stakes 'A' divisions, two Lady Slipper Stakes divisions, the Atlantic Sires Stakes Breeders Crown, and the Maritime Breeders Stakes. On Oct. 12, she matched a Canadian record and set a season’s mark of 1:53.3 while winning the Atlantic Breeders Crown at Charlottetown Driving Park.

In the Two-Year-Old Pacing Colt division, the finalists are Beau Jangles, Tilthecowscomehome and Windor.

Beau Jangles delivered an unforgettable freshman season for owners Graham Grace Stables LLC, Kiwi Stables LLC and Bolton Stables. Trained by Dr. Ian Moore, the Cattlewash colt won all 12 of his starts and became the richest earner on Canadian soil in 2025, amassing $1,688,750. His victories included the $227,100 Battle of Waterloo at Grand River and a complete sweep of the OSS program. Having never left Canada throughout the year, his biggest wins were at Mohawk, where he captured the $1 million Metro Pace in 1:49.1, matching a stakes and track record, before capping his rookie campaign with a $959,000 Breeders Crown victory in 1:48.3, setting a stakes, track and Canadian record in the process.

Tilthecowscomehome turned in an impressive rookie campaign for owners Carl and Jody Jamieson, Joanne Morrison and Blair Corbeil. Conditioned by Carl Jamieson, the Cattlewash colt won two of his 12 starts, including triumphs in divisions of the Tompkins Geers and Nassagaweya Stakes, where he took a season’s mark of 1:50.3. He added runner-up efforts in the Battle of Waterloo and Champlain Stakes, bringing his 2025 earnings to $378,102.

Windor delivered a quietly impressive rookie season for owner/breeder Dianna Secord and trainer Mike Vanderkemp. The Bulldog Hanover colt won two of 11 starts, both at Mohawk, including a career-best 1:51.2 victory in the $159,749 Champlain Stakes. He also added a runner-up finish in the $300,000 OSS Super Final and a third in a division of the Nassagaweya, finishing the season with earnings of $222,232.

Chantilly, Custard Dolce and Perfectly Chic are the finalists in the Three-Year-Old Pacing Filly category.

Chantilly, Canada’s reigning Horse of the Year, looks to add to her O’Brien trophy collection following a strong sophomore season for owner/breeder Millar Farms. Trained by Nick Gallucci, the Big Jim filly won six of 11 starts, including victories in the SBOA Stakes, a Fan Hanover elimination and three OSS Gold legs, one of which produced her career-best clocking of 1:49.4 on May 24. She concluded her provincial campaign with a score in the $300,000 OSS Super Final, a win that vaulted her seasonal earnings to $540,682. Chantilly had one start outside of Canada, which was a runner-up finish in the $347,222 James Lynch Memorial at Pocono Downs.

Building off a very strong rookie campaign, Custard Dolce carried her momentum into her sophomore season, dominating the Alberta racing scene in 2025 for owner/trainer/breeder Jamie Gray and co-owners Jackson Wittup, Max Gibb and Derek Wilson. The Custard The Dragon filly won eight of 12 starts, earning $242,488 to become the third-richest earner in her division in Canada. She captured the Alberta Sires Stakes Diamond and Marquis finals, the Gordon & Illa Rumpel Memorial and the Century Casino Filly Pace.

Perfectly Chic displayed consistency in 2025 for owner Steve Mihalic and trainer John Pentland, building on a solid rookie campaign to more than double her seasonal earnings from a season ago. The Betterthancheddar filly hit the board in 10 of 17 starts this year, with her two victories coming at Mohawk, in the $158,225 Simcoe Stakes and an OSS Gold leg, the latter being in a career-best 1:50.4. Perfectly Chic finished the season with $332,125 in earnings.

The finalists in the Three-Year-Old Pacing Colt division are Crack Shot, Fifth And Five and Prince Hal Hanover.

Crack Shot enjoyed most of his success in the OSS program, delivering stakes victories again in 2025 for owner/trainer Gregg McNair and co-owners Dale Hunter, Frank Brundle and George Kerr. The Bettors Delight colt won six of 16 starts and earned $505,267. His season was highlighted by triumphs in the SBOA Stakes, Simcoe Stakes, two OSS Gold legs, all of which were at Mohawk, and was capped off with a scintillating score in the $300,000 OSS Super Final, where he posted a lifetime-best 1:48.2.

Fifth And Five enjoyed a strong sophomore campaign. Recently purchased by Pollack Racing LLC, the son of Bettors Delight was trained and co-owned for most of his young career by Carl Jamieson, who guided him through a season in which he hit the board in 14 of 18 starts, including seven victories. His wins included multiple OSS Grassroots divisions, highlighted by a career-best 1:49.2 on July 11, which launched a six-race win streak capped by an OSS Gold leg triumph on Aug. 30. He established himself as a top Gold colt and closed out his provincial campaign with a runner-up finish in the $300,000 OSS Super Final at Mohawk which helped vault his earnings to $251,754.

Prince Hal Hanover emerged as one of the top three-year-old pacing colts of his division for owner Prince Hal Hanover Stable and trainer Dr. Ian Moore. Competing both north and south of the border during his sophomore season, the son of Captaintreacherous captured eight victories and earned $1,142,023 in 2025. His wins included a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes, the $527,397 Delvin Miller Adios Pace at The Meadows, $410,959 Carl Milstein Memorial at Northfield Park and a division of the Bluegrass Stakes at The Red Mile, which resulted in a lifetime-best clocking in 1:47.2.

Caviar N Crackers, Grit N Grace and Sylvia Hanover will compete for divisional honours in the Older Pacing Mare category.

Caviar N Crackers thrived in Preferred company for owners Ed and Ashleigh Hensley, elevating herself to become one of the top pacing mares this season. From 38 starts, the Captive Audience mare won 12 races and earned $269,780. She put together a six-race win streak from April 25 to May 30, highlighted by the richest victory of her career, in the $50,000 Forest City Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District. She later added another multiple-race streak that included a career-best 1:49.3 mile on July 11 at the Preferred level at Mohawk.

Grit N Grace took a massive leap from age three to four, establishing herself as one of the top contenders among the Open pacing mares at Mohawk. A model of durability for owner/breeder Lorraine Rey and trainer Mike Kwietniowski, the Im The Pied Piper mare started 35 times this season, winning 14 races and earning $333,520 in the process. Grit N Grace captured multiple Fillies & Mares Preferred events at Mohawk, with one of those victories resulting in a career-best clocking of 1:49.3 on June 20, and added runner-up finishes in the Margaret Juravinski Memorial at Flamboro Downs, as well as the Forest City Pace at The Raceway.

Sylvia Hanover regained her elite status in 2025 for owner Hudson Standardbred Stable Inc. and trainer Shawn Steacy, re-establishing herself as one of North America’s top pacing mares while earning $639,096. The Always B Miki mare won six of 14 seasonal starts, including a world record performance in the $136,986 Clara Barton Distaff Pace at Plainridge Park, where she stopped the clock in 1:47.2. She also notched signature victories at The Meadowlands in the $159,589 Perfect Sting and the $193,056 Lady Liberty.

Trained by David Menary on Canadian soil, the son of Stay Hungry completed a sweep of the New Holland Series at Mohawk which set off a seven-race win streak. His richest score was in the $100,000 Gold Cup at Mohawk, where he scored in a career-best 1:47.4.

Calicojack Hanover held his own in Open company during his four-year-old campaign for owner Determination and trainer Luc Blais. From 21 starts, the son of Captaintreacherous notched six wins and earned $324,607. He recorded a career-best 1:49 in an Open win at Mohawk on Aug. 30, while his richest victory was in the $247,500 Charles Juravinski Memorial Cup at Flamboro, where he stopped the clock in 1:50.2.

Ervin Hanover peaked at exactly the right time for owner Pollack Racing LLC and trainer David Menary. The son of Captaintreacherous won 10 of 17 starts in 2025, highlighted by victories in the $347,222 Dayton Pacing Derby at Dayton Raceway and the $347,222 Jim Ewart Memorial at Scioto Downs. His richest and most historic win was at Mohawk in the $822,000 Breeders Crown, where he stopped the clock in 1:46.2 – a Canadian, track and stakes record – pacing the fastest mile in Canadian history. That victory vaulted his seasonal earnings to $1,167,568.

Bingo Night, Flowing Tribute and Storybook Love are the finalists in the Two-Year-Old Trotting Filly category.

Bingo Night boasted a fantastic freshman campaign, earning $424,469 for owners Dustin Jones Stables Inc., Hebert Horses Inc., and Sjoblom Racing Inc. Trained by Dustin Jones, the daughter of Green Manalishi S won five of 12 starts, including two OSS Gold legs, a Peaceful Way Stakes elimination and the $300,000 OSS Super Final, where she stopped the clock in a season’s best 1:53.4.

Flowing Tribute put together a productive season for owners Pat Dillon, Laurie Rooney, Brian Kleinberg and Richard Beinhauer. Trained by Paul Reid, the Green Manalishi S filly won five of seven starts while earning $213,600. She captured four OSS Gold legs over the summer putting her best effort forward on July 11 when she took her mark of 1:54.4.

Storybook Love capped a highly promising rookie season in style for owners Al Libfeld and Brad Grant. Trained by Matt Bax, the Chapter Seven filly won four of 12 starts while earning $687,226, competing between New York and Ontario. After a runner-up finish in the $352,113 Big Apple at Vernon Downs, she returned to Mohawk to sweep her Breeders Crown efforts, culminating in an impressive 1:52.2 victory in the $959,000 final.

Another Great Mass, Ardonne and Strobe Lite will compete for divisional honours in the Two-Year-Old Trotting Colt category.

Another Great Mass put together a promising season for owner/breeder Wade Peconi and trainer Ed Peconi. The Muscle Mass gelding won three of 10 starts, including an OSS Gold leg, while earning $220,166. On Aug. 22, he took his mark of 1:56.1 in a two-year-old open win at Mohawk and capped his season with a second-place finish in the $300,000 OSS Super Final.

In just eight starts in 2025, Ardonne delivered a strong rookie campaign, earning $400,452 for trainer Megan Scran and owner Phillip Steinberg. The Tactical Landing colt found the winner’s circle twice on Canadian soil, first breaking his maiden in a William Wellwood elimination and then capturing the $485,000 final in 1:52.4, tying the stakes record. He finished as the second-richest Canadian earner among all eligible two-year-olds in this division, making the most of his limited starts north of the border.

Strobe Lite excelled in his freshman season for owner/trainer Ben Baillargeon and co-owners Claude Hamel, Nunzio Vena and Glengate Farms. The Alarm Detector colt won three of 11 starts and earned $379,921 on the year. His most notable victories included an OSS Gold leg, a division of the Champlain Stakes, where he took a season’s mark of 1:53.3, and the $300,000 OSS Super Final.

The Three-Year-Old Trotting Filly category finalists are Lasting Dream, Monalishi and Stormont Beautiful.

Lasting Dream excelled in major stakes events for owner/breeder Determination and trainer Luc Blais. The Cantab Hall filly won four of 13 starts and bankrolled $363,856. Her highlights included the Delmonica Hanover consolation at Pocono, followed by her richest victory of her career, where she was placed up in the $375,000 Elegantimage Stakes.

An O’Brien Award winner at two, Monalishi had a smooth transition as a sophomore from what was a successful rookie season for owner Tim Klemencic and trainer/co-owner Blake MacIntosh. The Green Manalishi S filly visited victory lane four times from 11 races and amassed $431,694 in earnings. Her wins included an SBOA Stakes elimination, a New York Mile division at Yonkers Raceway, an OSS Gold leg and the $300,000 OSS Super Final, where she lowered her lifetime mark to 1:52.1. In addition, she also finished a solid third in the $910,365 Breeders Crown at Mohawk.

Emoticon Legacy, Galen Erso and P L Spencer are up for O’Brien hardware in the Three-Year-Old Trotting Colt division.

Emoticon Legacy showed promise as a two-year-old but truly exploded as a three-year-old for owner/breeder Determination and trainer Luc Blais. The royally-bred son of Walner out of the great Emoticon Hanover captured seven of 10 starts this year, earning $1,313,575. His victories included a track record performance in the $227,000 Goodtimes Stakes at Mohawk, where he stopped the clock in 1:50.2. Emoticon Legacy also added a pair of sub-1:50 miles to his resume, including a record-setting 1:49.4 score in the $615,000 Canadian Trotting Classic, becoming the first sophomore trotter in Canada to break the 1:50 barrier. He followed that with a career-best 1:49.2 in the $694,444 Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile.

The Green Manalishi S colt Galen Erso competed solidly in 2025 for owner Brad Grant and trainer Gregg McNair, winning three of 15 starts and $268,099 on the year. He took his season’s mark of 1:53 on June 7 in an elimination of the Goodtimes and posted victories in the SBOA Stakes final and an OSS Gold leg. He finished his season on a strong note with a runner-up finish in the $300,000 OSS Super Final.

P L Spencer dominated OSS action for owner/trainer Steve Bossence and co-owners Richard Thompson, Derek Reid and E C S Racing LLC. The Resolve colt won 10 of 16 starts and earned cheques in every start. He won three OSS Gold legs and, in the June 23 leg at Mohawk, set the fastest mile by a male sophomore trotter in OSS history, stopping the clock in 1:51.3. He also swept the Dream Of Glory Stakes elimination and final, and won the OSS Super Final en route to his $528,081 season.

In the Older Trotting Mare category, Bella Cavalla, Call Me Goo and Emoji Hanover are the finalists.

Bella Cavalla proved her worth in 2025 competing against the boys at Mohawk on a weekly basis for owners Michael Sergi and David Phillips. The Dover Dan mare hit the board in half of her starts – while winning five of 32 – and banking $83,000 for a myriad of trainers, but currently hails from the stable of Kyle Fellows where she did the bulk of her racing in 2025.

Call Me Goo is looking for back-to-back wins in this category and was lightly raced yet remarkably consistent, never missing a cheque in nine starts for Graham Grace Stables LLC, William Roberts, Kiwi Stables LLC and Ake Svanstedt Inc. Trained by Ake Svanstedt, the Googoo Gaagaa mare earned $283,845 with two wins, including victories in the Six Pack and a Miss Versatility Series leg, while also finishing second in the Armbro Flight Stakes and fourth in the Maple Leaf Trot against male rivals.

Emoji Hanover had a productive season for owner/breeder Determination and trainer Luc Blais. From 13 starts, the Greenshoe mare won four races and finished second twice on her way to earning $118,475 on the year. She reeled off three straight wins in late summer, matched her career mark of 1:52.3 on Oct. 7 at Mohawk, and finished fourth in the Breeders Crown to round out her 2025 season.

Amigo Volo, Logan Park and Nasey are the finalists competing for O’Brien honours in the Older Trotting Horse category.

Amigo Volo delivered steady performances in the Preferred ranks for owners Pinske Stables and David J. Miller. Trained by Meg Crone, the Father Patrick gelding won six of 27 starts and $272,455 on the year. He secured five top-class wins at Mohawk and finished fifth in the Breeders Crown.

Logan Park, a winner in this category last year, remained a force for owners Outofthepark Stable, Reg Higgs and Arpad Szabo. Trained by Kyle Fellows, the Archangel gelding captured eight of 19 starts, bankrolling $287,917 in 2025. He won three straight Preferred events at Mohawk before travelling overseas to compete in Sweden's Elitloppet. Upon his return to Canadian soil, he then racked up five more victories in Preferred events.

Nasey was a breakout star for owner A1stable and trainer Jodie Cullen. The six-year-old Pilgrims Chuckie gelding won seven of 42 starts and $210,940 in purse earnings. He captured multiple events for $70,000 claimers at Mohawk this year and lowered his career mark to 1:52. On Aug. 10, as the longest shot on the board at 61-1, he scored the biggest upset in the history of the Earl Rowe Memorial Trot when he trotted to a 1:53 victory.

Jodie Cullen, David Menary and Dr. Ian Moore are the finalists for Trainer of the Year.
