As 2009 draws to a close, two of WEG’s most successful trainers are battling it out for the top spot

.

Currently at the top of the standings is Ben Baillargeon, who has enjoyed a phenomenal season with 105 wins posted and $2,134,518 in purses earned, from a stable that made 689 starts on the WEG circuit. Baillargeon’s win percentage is 15.2%.

But close behind the veteran Baillargeon is a relatively fresh face – Tracy Brainard, who is in charge of the powerful Bulletproof Enterprises stable. Her flotilla of three-year-old pacing fillies alone would be the envy of many a conditioner, and Brainard has racked up 100 wins on the WEG circuit this year, with $4,555,642 in earnings, from 526 starters. Her stable’s win percentage is 19%.

With just seven racing days left in the 2009 calendar at WEG, which trainer will come out on top?

Baillargeon has four entries going behind the starting gate at Woodbine on Thursday night, including favourites General Luckypercy in the second, and Pickmeamerigold in the third; another three on Friday night, December 18, including Kilted Pride, the 2-1 choice in the seventh; and two more on Saturday night, December 19, among them trotting stalwart Enny Youngman.

Brainard, meanwhile, has two going postward on Thursday night, including favourite In A Craze, in the fifth; three more on Friday night, including Panderosa Pine, the 2-1 favourite in the third race; and an armada of seven on Saturday, December 19, including Revolutionary Foe, who is the 7-2 betting choice in the eleventh race.

Either trainer could claim year-end honours in the coming days. Stay tuned!
