Callie Magoo and Coca Jo pulled off a pair of upset victories as a another division of the Alliance Claiming Series began on Friday night (December 15) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Longshot leader Callie Magoo held off Weskey and Peeling Out by a head in a photo finish to win the first of two $5,400 divisions for $8,500 claiming trotters in 2:03.2 over the snow covered track. The eight-year-old Magoo gelding returned $47.60 for the upset win while heavy favourite Elmo Rockbottom broke stride early on. Alfie Carroll drove Callie Magoo to his first win of the year in 21 starts for trainer Kyle Bossence and co-owner Brandon Bossence.
Trotting mare Coca Jo was on the lead early and again late in the mile to pull off a mild upset in the second division. Cool Creek Valley looped the leaver at the quarter pole and rebuffed 2-5 favourite Charles Ray before 3-1 second choice Tys Little Dream came calling. However, Coca Jo split rivals coming off the final turn and out-finished Tys Little Dream in a neck decision for the 2:03.2 victory. The 8-1 shot paid $19.80 to win. Colin Kelly drove the five-year-old daughter of Jailhouse Jesse for trainer Stacey Reinsma and co-owners Ken Middleton Jr., Jeffrey Seibel and Wilbert Seaton. The win was her second of the season from 38 starts.
The second leg of this series will be held next Friday, Dec. 22 at The Raceway followed by the $10,000 (added) final on Friday, Dec. 29.
