Perfetto Upsets In Preferred Trot

Perfetto found himself in the role of the spoiler in Monday’s $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park thanks to his come-from-behind score at odds of 9-2 for trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen.

Perfetto was in no hurry in the early going, getting away fifth while Grandma Heidi and P L Jill battled to the quarter pole in :27.3. Those two mares continued to wage war through middle splits of :55 and 1:24 before both of them grew leg weary.

Race favourite Oney Hall tracked cover from second over at the half, and Perfetto and Henriksen found themselves third over while sitting fifth on the outside. Oney Hall swung off cover in the lane, but got crooked in the lane and rolled into a break. That left the door wide-open for Perfetto, and he didn’t let the golden opportunity go to waste. The gelding kicked home in :28 to win by three-quarters of a length over Zig Zag. Longshot Only For Justice rallied from last in the eight-horse affair to finish third.

The victory was the seventh of the season for the five-year-old son of Majestic Son-Perfect Prelude. Gerald Haggerty of Camden East, Ont. owns the 16-time winner who matched his lifetime mark of 1:52.3 while pushing his career cash stash to $394,276.
