A bidding war for trotting broodmare Hot Mess Hanover ended in another seven-figure sale at the 2024 Standardbred Horse Sale, which continued on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

The five-day auction, which began on Monday with prices hitting the million-dollar mark during the opening yearling session, moved into the mixed sale portion on Thursday featuring a selection of racehorses, broodmares, stallion shares, yearlings and weanlings.

The first mixed session was topped by Hot Mess Hanover, a Grand Circuit stakes winner selling in foal to Walner with a full sibling to triple millionaire and 1:49.2 trotting mare Jiggy Jog S, for a final bid of $1,388,889 ($1 million USD). Selling as Hip 1,178 from the Preferred Equine Marketing consignment, Hot Mess Hanover was purchased by Winning Key of Leechburg, Pennsylvania.  Jiggy Jog S was the first foal for the 10-year-old Cantab Hall-Her Culese mare, who has also produced Grand Circuit stakes winners Wild Jiggy S ($140,500 - 1:55.2f) and Margareta Hanover ($83,646 - 1:56) since.

With her million-dollar price tag, Hot Mess Hanover is the first Standardbred broodmare (ie. a female horse sold in foal or with foals on the ground) to sell for seven figures in North America.

A pair of trotting broodmares from the All American Harnessbreds dispersal, On Your Tab and Climb The Pole, were among the day's top sellers at $694,444 ($500,000 USD).

On Your Tab, Hip 1,056, was purchased by Cindy Stewart of Paris, Kentucky. Selling in foal to Walner, the eight-year-old Cantab Hall-Soutaine Hanover mare has produced two foals of racing age, both Grand Circuit stakes winners: On The House ($110,279 - 1:55f) and Buy A Round ($888,899 - 1:51.4) -- the latter three-year-old filly by Walner selling just prior as as a broodmare prospect for $486,111 ($350,000 USD) to Armitage Farm of Wilmington, Delaware.

Armitage Farm also acquired Climb The Pole, Hip 1,060. A Grand Circuit stakes winner, the four-year-old Kadabra-Legzy mare earned nearly $300,000 and took a mark of 1:52.2s. The new broodmare sold in foal to Chapter Seven.

Another top-selling broodmare was Angelou, Hip 1,057, purchased for $638,888 ($460,000 USD) by Odds On Racing of Edmonton, Kentucky. Consigned by All American Harnessbreds, the nine-year-old American Ideal-Copywriter mare is the dam of this year's Little Brown Jug champion Captain Albano ($1,642,406 - 1:48.1) as well as Captain Planet ($146,663 - 1:51.3f) from two foals of racing age. She is carrying a foal from the first crop of last year's U.S. Horse of the Year, Confederate.

Thursday's mixed session sported total sales of $22,188,889 ($15,976,000 USD) with an average of $64,503 ($46,442 USD) across the broodmares, racehorses, stallion shares and weanlings offered.

The 2024 Standardbred Horse Sale will conclude on Friday, Nov. 8 with the final mixed session at 11 a.m.
