Alberta horseman Mark Haining has officially taken the ‘Movember’ plunge and his fundraising efforts have already surged to $1,500. He allowed some of his donors to shave his moustache, beard and hair, which resulted in an epic transformation.
This past Saturday (November 5), some ‘Legends of Alberta’ competed in an exhibition race to help support Haining in raising funds for men’s cancers.
The race was won by Pat Tracey, who drove Sayitlikeyoumeanit to victory in 1:59. Fred Gillis (who drove Regina Beach) finished second and John Baxter (Chillinlikeavillin) was third. Ron Graham (Promise We Can) came in fourth, while Don Monkman Jr. (Exclusive) finished fifth.
Drivers’ family, friends and fans were out to cheer on and celebrate the day. Other legends – Ed Tracey, Lloyd Ducharme, Doug Stout and Doug Shaw – were on hand to mingle with the public, exhibit some memorabilia, and chat with fans about old times and new.
An entry on Haining’s Movember page (which appears below) explains why he decided to join the fray this year.
’The Movember Foundation is the only global charity focused solely on men's health, so this Movember I'm getting on board. My motivation is my family. There is a long history of cancer in my family, from my great grandparents, right down to my own parents. My Dad has cut his hair three times donating the hair for wigs, and the money to fight cancer. I've always wanted to get involved in a bigger way, so this is my chance to help. I will be shaving not only my mustache, but my head as well.’
Even though over $1,500 has been raised, donations are still coming in and being accepted, both in person and through Haining’s Movember page.
Those that donated to Haining’s cause were given the chance to win the shaving duties, as well as a prize package donated by ASHA, Century Downs and the Standardbred Canada’s ‘I Love Canadian Harness Racing’ fan club.
ASHA would like to thank everyone for their support in the event.
