Putnam Mackenzie has been a four-legged ATM machine in recent weeks in London, and her winning ways continued in Tuesday’s $9,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 at The Raceway at The Western Fair District.
The Dean Nixon-trained Putnam Mackenzie has now rattled off three consecutive wins in the class, and today’s triumph came in off-the-pace fashion.
James MacDonald worked out a second-over trip with the six-year-old daughter of Grinfromeartoear-Royas Bambi, and when he called on her to step three wide in the late stages of the mile she responded and used a :30.1 closing quarter to win by a length in 1:56.4 over Sand Gesture, who chopped out fractions of :28, :57 and 1:26.2. Brushstrokes rallied from third over to finish third.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the eight-horse affair, Putnam Mackenzie won for the eighth time this season for owner Leo Racicot of Harrow, Ontario. The 28-time winner boasts a bankroll that now stands at $373,367.
Another mare that’s done her fair share of winning in recent weeks is the Eric Lock-trained Laura Mae. The mare notched the 42nd win of her career in Tuesday’s $5,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 class for driver Billy Davis Jr.
Davis rushed her to the lead and led the field to the quarter in :28.3 before taking a backseat to Twilight Kate through middle splits of :58.3 and 1:28.3. Laura Mae found clearance in the stretch and kicked home in a :30-second clip to win by a head over Noartographsplease in 1:58.4. Race favourite Mc Taylor was third.
Katherine Lock of Dundas, Ontario owns the 10-year-old daughter of Camluck-Sign Of Joy, who extended her winning streak to three-in-a-row with the triumph. She’s won five of her last seven outings and has gone 7-for-29 on the season. She’s quickly closing in on career earnings of $250,000.
